Memory-Based Learning of Animacy

چکیده

Animacy is highly correlated with a number of other linguistic concepts, such as transitivity, agentivity, topicality and discourse salience. A key generalisation or tendency is that prominent grammatical features tend to attract other prominent features; subjects, for instance, will tend to be animate and agentive, whereas objects prototypically are inanimate and themes/patients. Exceptions to this generalisation express a more marked structure, a property which has consequences, for instance, for the distributional properties of the structure in question. Building on these assumptions, seven morphosyntactic features which, in different ways, approximate the multi-faceted property of animacy are made use of for classification:

Adaptive memory: animacy effects persist in paired-associate learning.

Recent evidence suggests that animate stimuli are remembered better than matched inanimate stimuli. Two experiments tested whether this animacy effect persists in paired-associate learning of foreign words. Experiment 1 randomly paired Swahili words with matched animate and inanimate English words. Participants were told simply to learn the English "translations" for a later test. Replicating e...

Adaptive memory: Animacy enhances free recall but impairs cued recall.

Recent research suggests that human memory systems evolved to remember animate things better than inanimate things. In the present experiments, we examined whether these effects occur for both free recall and cued recall. In Experiment 1, we directly compared the effect of animacy on free recall and cued recall. Participants studied lists of objects and lists of animals for free-recall tests, a...

Multiple Influences of Semantic Memory on Sentence Processing: Distinct Effects of Semantic Relatedness on Violations of Real-World Event/State Knowledge and Animacy Selection Restrictions.

We aimed to determine whether semantic relatedness between an incoming word and its preceding context can override expectations based on two types of stored knowledge: real-world knowledge about the specific events and states conveyed by a verb, and the verb's broader selection restrictions on the animacy of its argument. We recorded event-related potentials on post-verbal Agent arguments as pa...

Investigating the effectiveness of memory-based computer cognitive games in improving working memory and sustained attention of students with learning disability

Abstract Background and aim: Nowadays, exploring strategies to help students with learning disabilities is one of the areas of interest for many psychologists and researchers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of memory-based computer cognitive games in improving working memory and sustained attention of students with learning disabilities in Arak. Method: The method ...

A categorical recall strategy does not explain animacy effects in episodic memory.

Animate stimuli are better remembered than matched inanimate stimuli in free recall. Three experiments tested the hypothesis that animacy advantages are due to a more efficient use of a categorical retrieval cue. Experiment 1 developed an "embedded list" procedure that was designed to disrupt participants' ability to perceive category structure at encoding; a strong animacy effect remained. Exp...
